Welcome to Sylva-Bay's Preschool program!
I am glad that you have chosen to send your child to Sylva-Bay Academy this year. I am looking forward to another successful and rewarding year. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to teach your child. I trust it will be a wonderful year of learning and fun!
We will be learning our alphabet, numbers, shapes, colors, Bible verses and a lot more! Workbooks have been especially prepared with your child in mind!
You can encourage your child by asking him or her about his or her day at school. Be sure to praise your son or daughter for the efforts he or she shows!
I hope that you will refer to this handbook throughout the year when you have questions. If you have questions that are not answered here, please feel free to ask me.
START TIME:
School begins promptly at 8:00 am each morning. There are a few exceptions when you may need to have your child at school a little earlier than usual. We have photographers here several times a year and we try to schedule our K classes early before the children have a chance to get anything on their clothes or mess up their hair!
DROP OFF AND PICK UP:
The drop-off and pick up point is under the covered walk way. You are asked to always remain in your car and whichever teacher is on duty will unload your child in the morning. All of the K teachers are on duty in the afternoon to load each student.
AFTER-SCHOOL CARE:
SBA offers an after-school program. There is an extra fee for this and if you are interested you well need to call the office for more information. The teachers on duty in the afternoon will make sure that your child gets safely to after-care, which is located in the cafeteria building.
FOLDERS:
Your child will get a folder the first day of school. This folder will be sent home daily with your child's work for the day and any information that we send home. This folder is to be sent back daily in your child's backpack. Also, any information that you need to send to me should be placed in this folder, such as snack/lunch orders. It is very important that you check your child's folder each day and send the folder back to school each day.
EXTRA CLOTHES:
Please send a complete change of clothes in a gallon zip lock bag with your child's name on the bag. These clothes will be kept in your child's cubby for emergency situations. If we have to use these clothes, we will send the soiled clothes home. Please remember to send a clean set the next day.
ILLNESS:
If your child throws up at night or has any other stomach problems, please do not send them to school the next morning. Most stomach viruses last at least 24 hours. Also, if your child has a temperature during the night, they should be free of fever for 24 hours before returning to class. This helps keep others from being exposed.
If your child becomes sick at school, you will be called to come and pick him/her up. If your child complains of not feeling well, we will take him/her to the office and have their temperature checked. If they have fever, you will be notified.
MEDICATION:
If your child is on an antibiotic and a dose if required during school hours, please send the medication in a zip lock bag with instructions as to what time and the dosage of medication is to be given. We will send the medication to the office and Ms. Dina will give the medication at the correct time.
TOYS:
Toys may be brought to school with the understanding that we share. There are certain toys that are not allowed at all! These are baseball bats, hard balls, toy swords, gold clubs, hockey sticks or any other toy that can be used as a weapon.
Your child will not be allowed to play with his or her toy if behavior is a factor for that day.
MOVIES:
Your child may bring a movie to school as long as it is rated G. We do not allow any movie that portrays violence, disrespect, or attitude issues. Rugrats and Power Rangers are not allowed.
BIRTHDAYS:
Your child will receive a birthday balloon on his/her birthday. If you would like to send cupcakes or goodie bags on the day of your child's birthday, please notify me at least 2 days prior.
CLASS FAVORITE ELECTIONS:
We have class favorite elections each year. Since the children can not write names, we let the children come up and whisper a boys name and a girls name that they think would be a good class favorite. The boy and the girl with the most votes will be elected. You will be notified if your child is elected and of the dates their picture will be taken for the yearbook.
DENTAL AND DOCTORS APPOINTMENTS:
Please let me know when your child will be leaving early or if they will be getting to school late due to a Dr. Appointment. If your child is marked absent for that day, we cancel their lunch order. If you know in advance that your child is going to be late, please let me know so the lunch order can be adjusted.
COMMUNITY HELPERS:
We have a unit on Community Helpers during the second or third month of school. If you have an interesting job that you would like to come and share with the class please let me know so that we can set up a day and time for you to come.
DISCIPLINE:
We start the very first day of school learning school rules and class rules. These are rules that your child will be expected to learn. We go over and over and over these rules and you would be surprised at how quickly the children catch on to the following class rules:
1. No running in the classroom.
2. In our seat: feet on the floor, hands in our lap, and eyes on the teacher.
3. We use inside voices inside and we are allowed to yell outdoors.
4. We do not play in the bathrooms.
5. We stay on the sidewalk when we come and go from the cars.
6. We do not run to our cars, we let a teacher load and unload us.
These rules are for your child's protection. Please help them to remember these rules.
SNACK AND LUNCH:
Each month you will receive a school calendar with events for the month, as well as a menu. You will also receive 4 snack and lunch order forms for the month. It helps with planning if you fill out the form for the week and send your child's weekly order. However, some parents choose to order by the month. If your child misses a day and has already ordered snack/lunch, you will receive credit for that day. You will be notified on Friday of any credit that you have.
We do not eat in the cafeteria. The children are more at ease and we can take a little longer to eat in the classroom. We do not allow candy to be ordered for snack. We also see that your child eats the morning snack item before eating anything extra from their lunch boxes. (For example, the sausage and biscuit has to be eaten before the fruit roll up.) The same goes for lunch.
You may order lunch from the monthly menu or send a sandwich or lunchables. We have a refrigerator and we keep items such as mustard, mayo and ketchup. We can also keep your child's sandwich, lunchable, etc. cool until needed. If your child will not eat the item listed on the menu for snack, there are other options available such as Grandma's cookies, honeybuns, chips, cereal, peanut butter crackers, brownies, powdered donuts and cereal. Drinks that are available include chocolate milk, white milk, coke, sprite and diet coke or tea.
