Biology I Insect Collection

Questions and Answers:

1.When is my insect collection due?
Insect collections are due Monday, Sept. 26, 2011 during 1st period.  5 extra points will be awarded to those students who turn in their collection a week in advance on Monday, Sept. 19, 2011 during 1st period.

2.How many insects should I collect?
You should collect 25 different species of insects.  Each insect should be at least 1 inch in length.  The 25 insects you collect should represent 7 scientific orders.

3.On what should I mount my insects?
Insects should be mounted on a rectangular piece of white Styrofoam board only.  DO NOT use foam poster board, cork board, or shadow boxes. 

4.How should I mount my insects and their labels?
Insects and labels should be mounted onto the Styrofoam board with straight pins.  Do not use colored ball pins or tape.  It’s distracting.

5.How should I label my insects?
Insects should be labeled by both the scientific order to which they belong and their common name.  Be very specific when labeling common names.  Labels must be typed.  No crazy fonts.  When making your labels, list the scientific order first and then the common name directly underneath. 

6.How should I arrange my insects? 
Insects should be arranged alphabetically by the scientific order and then alphabetically by common name within the order.

7.Can I purchase any of my insects? 
NO.  Credit will not be given for any insect that is purchased through any means.  The goal of this project is to get out into nature and find insects that are teaming within our environment.

8.In what condition do my insects need to be?
Insects should be in pristine condition.  Broken wings, legs, or other body parts will result in point deductions.

9.How should I kill/preserve my insects?
Insects may be killed or preserved in the freezer or a in a jar that contains a cotton ball soaked in nail polish remover.

10.What is an insect?
An insect has three distinct body parts (head, thorax, and abdomen) and six legs.

11.Do I have to be neat?
YES.  Messy work results in a messy grade.
