Home of the Saints!

Dear Parents,
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to be your child's K5 teacher. I am looking forward to a wonderful year with your child. Please be assured that I will love your child and treat him/her as I would want my children to be treated. To ensure the best education for your child, it is important that we work together as a team. Please feel free to talk to me whenever you have a question.
Below you will find some information that I would like to share with you. Let me know if there is something that you have questions about that are not discussed below.
I consider it a great privilege and responsibility to be your child's teacher.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Kathy Manning

We need a copy of the following information for your child's cumulative records:

1. Immunization Record
2. Birth Certificate
3. Social Security Card

FOLDER:Your child's folder will be sent back and forth between home and school each day. Be sure to check it daily for papers and other important information, and I'll do the same.

NAP MATERIALS:Blankets will be sent home periodically to be washed. Please be sure to send them back the next school day.

MEDICINE:All medicines must be kept in the school office and will be given there. Your child's name, time to be given and amount need to be written on a bag that contains the medicine.

CHANGES OF CLOTHES: Put these clothes in a labeled zip lock bag. These clothes will stay in your child's backpack. This will make it easier to find the clothes should a change be needed, and you will always be aware of the clothes your child has at school.

SICKNESS:If your child becomes sick during school, you will be called. If your child gets sick at home, please keep him/her at home. A child must be free of fever 24 hours before returning to school. We do not want to spread germs to other students. K5 students are allowed to miss only 20 days of school. Please do not tell your child to call you if he/she begins feeling sick. More than likely, you can expect a phone call if you say that. If your child has not been feeling well, just write a note to make me aware of the situation, and I will watch your child for any symptoms of illness.

AFTER SCHOOL CARE:Our school offers an after school care program. This is for parents who cannot pick up their child at 3:00. The after-care facility is located in our cafeteria. Please call the school for more information.

TOYS:Toys may be brought to school with the understanding that we share. No dangerous toys may be brought to school. Also, if this is a toy that your child will get upset about if it is broken or lost, do not send it to school. Toys are only played with during play times. If problems occur, this privilege will be stopped.

SCHOOL HOURS:School begins at 8:00 AM and ends at 3:00 PM.

DROP OFF/PICK UP:You are asked to always remain in your car and stop ONLY at the designated area at the covered walkway. This is for your child and every child's safety. Teachers will be on duty to make sure your child safely gets to his/her classroom in the mornings and back into your vehicle in the afternoon. Do not stop in front of the classroom because it is too congested and dangerous for everyone.

HOMEWORK:K5 children work hard every day in class. Even though I do want you and your child to BRIEFLY go over work in the folder, please do not spend a lot of time doing so. Children this age need to play and relax! Later in the year your child will take books home to read. Just spend a few minutes each night listening to your child. e sure to brag about your child's work each day.

DISCIPLINE:We start the very first day of school learning school and class rules. Safely and an atmosphere of learning are very important. Some of these rules are:

1. Walk (No running) in the classroom.
2. Inside voices in the classroom.
3. No talking while teacher is talking.
4. Walk on sidewalk in an orderly manner.
5. Keep hands and feet to yourself.
6. Stay in seat unless given permission to get up.
7. No playing in restroom
8. BE KIND

Time-out if our main form of discipline. However, if these is a major problem or if time-out does not work for your child, a visit to Dr. Moss may be needed. You are sending your child to Sylva-Bay Academy to receive a high quality education. This cannot be achieved if there is not an atmosphere of safely and learning. This is why rules are important.

CLASSWORK:I try to send work home daily, however, there may be days when this is impossible. I will send those papers home the following day.

MEALS:Each month you will receive a school calendar with events for the month and snack and lunch menus. I send the order forms home twice a year - at the beginning of the year and when we return from Christmas. It helps a great deal if you will fill out the form for the week and send the correct money. It gets too complicated to have to give change back. If you child misses a day of school that you have paid for a meal, he/she will have a credit the following week. ALWAYS PUT THE ORDER AND THE MONEY IN A LABELED ENVELOPE AND PUT IT IN YOUR CHILD'S FOLDER. DO NOT SEND MONEY AND JUST TELL YOUR CHILD TO ORDER SOMETHING.

There are some changes being made concerning meals this year. K5 students will go to the cafeteria to eat, and time is limited. It is very important that your child eats quietly and does not waste time. There are microwaves in the cafeteria. Please send food that just needs to be warmed. Do not send frozen food because of the limited time we have. If you send those taco or pizza meals that nee to be "put together", ensure that your child can assemble their lunch themselves. Please do not send popcorn that needs to be microwave. Also, you need to keep the meals you send simple enough that your child can open containers and eat the food with little or no help. An example of this is to slice and peel oranges at home and end them in a zip lock bag. Napkins, paper plates and utensils are not on the supply list. It will be your responsibility to send those items in your child's lunchbox on the days those items are needed. The paper towels your send are for classroom activities and big spills. It would be very helpful if you would help your child learn how to open bags of cookies, crackers and chips and put straws in drinks. Of course, I will help, but it would be great if your child could do these without much assistance. It would also be helpful if you would start teaching your child how to pick up after himself/herself, put things that need to be saved back in the lunchbox and throw their trash away. Please remind your child which foods are for snacks and which are for lunch. Many times children cannot distinguish between the two meals. Don't forget that milk and juices are offered at both meals. You may want your child to drink these instead of tea or soft drinks. Also, let your child help pick what he/she wants from the menu. This gives children some responsibility. Even though candy is sold in the cafeteria, K5 students are not allowed to buy any because given the chance, most children would eat only candy. This is something they may get to do in first grade.
