Biology II Leaf Collection Project

Questions and Answers:

1.When is my leaf collection due?
Leaf collections are due Monday, Sept. 26, 2011 during 2nd period.

2.What kind of leaves should I collect?
You should collect leaves from trees only.

3.What should I put my leaf collection in?
Each page of the leaf collection should be contained in a page protector, and the entire collection should be placed into a white, 3-ring binder.  Leaves should be mounted onto white computer paper only.

4.How many leaves should I have in my collection?
You should have 25 different leaf species in your collection.

5.How many leaves may I place on a page?
Place no more than 1 leaf specimen on a page.  This may include a single leaf or a cluster of leaves.  You don’t want your collection to look crowded.

6.How should I label each leaf species?
Leaves should be labeled with both the scientific and common names.  The scientific name should be given first and italicized.  The scientific name includes the genus name, which is capitalized, and then the species name.  The common name should not be italicized.  Labels should be typed and placed in the upper right hand corner of the page.  See Example.

7.Do I need to include a cover page?
Yes.  Your cover page should include your name, class name, project name, and assignment due date.

8.How should I arrange the leaves in my collection?
Leaves should be arranged in alphabetical order by scientific name.

9.How should I prepare my leaves?
Leaves should be collected several days before they are ready to be placed into your binder.  To preserve your leaves place specimens between two paper towels and then between two heavy objects (large books).  Keep your leaves in this position for several days.  When mounting leaves onto the computer paper, do not show any visible signs of glue or tape.  Points will be deducted for any messy, distracting work.

10.Can I earn extra points?
5 extra points will be awarded to those students who turn in their collection a week in advance on Monday, Sept. 19, 2011 during 2nd period.
